A few months ago, I sent a message to my friends’ group chat on Facebook. We’re all college students and we spend most of our time plugged into our laptops and smartphones. I wanted to know how, if at all, they kept their computers secure.
“I have a password on my laptop and my phone,” my friend John messages back to me. “It’s not the same password so I think I’m pretty locked down.” I’ve started this conversation several times with other students, yielding—at most—mild emphasis on two-step verification or password managers from tech-minded peers.
