Uber Shock: Firm Hid Breach of 57 Million Users

The information security industry is in shock after Uber confessed to a massive data breach affecting 57 million customers and drivers around the globe, which it concealed last year by paying off the hackers. CEO Dara Khosrowshahi claimed the incident happened in late 2016 when two individuals “inappropriately accessed user data stored on a third-party cloud-based service that we use.” Data stolen included the names, email addresses and mobile phone numbers of 57 million Uber users globally, including 600,000 US drivers, who had their names and driver’s license numbers taken.
